The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (Hellenic Open University) announces a second round of implementation of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) […]

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (Hellenic Open University) announces a second round of implementation of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on “Promoting the professional development of students in school”, which is part of the European project “Neet prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education-NEFELE”, currently undergoing by DAISSy-HOU, as the Greek partner. It is a modern MOOC, aimed at training teachers in their critical role of supporting the professional development of students. The first round of the MOOC implementation was completed with success; the same MOOC is launched once again, so that to respond to the interest of those who missed the opportunity to join in it, in the recent past.

Specifically, the MOOC includes four (4) training modules based on the theoretical framework of career development and positive psychology, linked to practical examples for teachers, so that they can promote career planning for their students in the classroom. It also has one (1) educational module based on NEFELE BOX, which is the toolkit for the tangible user interface that the teacher can utilize with the students, supporting the design of their future career path. It is interspersed with videos, presentations and reading material as well as short quizzes (at the end of each module) so that learners can assess their progress.

In particular, the e-learning platform of the NEFELE project is designed and developed in English, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Dutch. It fosters collaboration and exchange among the participants, as it includes forums and discussion areas. The MOOC learning content in English [e.g. Open Education Resources (OERs), lectures, video scripts, presentations] was collected, developed and based on this, the MOOC videos were created. It is noteworthy that the learning materials, classified into modules, are available in five (5) languages under the NEFELE project partnership scheme.

Upon successful completion of the MOOC, participants will learn about:

Current and future challenges related to the world of work

Main aspects and main theories of career development from childhood to adolescence

How the teacher can support the career development and well-being of students in the school environment

Main positive psychology theories of well-being

Ways of positive education intervention in the school environment

Tangible user interfaces

Digital career narrative

Use of the NEFELE Box to promote career development and wellbeing in the classroom

It is worth noting that:

The new round of the NEFELE MOOC starts on Μarch 20, 2024, has a five(5)-week duration and ends on April 24, 2024.

The deadline for registration is March 17, 2024.

Participants who successfully complete the MOOC will receive a Certificate of Completion

It is provided free of charge to any interested party, internationally.

Registration is pre-required and can be done by submitting an application form at the following link.

It is a dissemination event of the results of the “Neet prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education-NEFELE” European project, currently undergoing by the DAISSy-HOU, as the Greek partner.

Specifically, the NEFELE project aims to empower teachers and career counsellors with the tools and knowledge for an integrated approach and for the enhancement of students’ careers. One of the project outcomes is the NEFELE educational model, which includes the NEFELE Massive Open Online Course-MOOC, the NEFELE digital game, an innovative game specifically designed for careers and the NEFELE platform which includes the above as well as the re-scripting by teachers.

This dissemination event was addressed to teachers preparing and working in the field, trainers of teachers, career counsellors, psychologists. It was open to all and had a good impact, attracting the interest of more than twenty-five (25) people from the target groups and areas of interest of the NEFELE project.

The sessions started by a welcome speech by Achilleas Kameas, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the Hellenic Open University and Director of DAISSy, and his presentation about the activities of the Research Group, putting emphasis on its vision and mission.

Subsequently, Vasiliki Takouli, Project Manager of DAISSy, presented the NEFELE project and analyzed its actions, objectives and results, as well as the specific role of DAISSy, which developed the NEFELE MOOC and the e-learning platform and worked intensively, so as to provide a modern educational tool that effectively serves the needs of teachers.

The speeches continued with Hara Kokkinou, Researcher at DAISSy, who presented in detail the content of the NEFELE MOOC, analyzing the way of creating and thinking behind the desired profile as well as its objective.

This was followed by a presentation by Rizos Chaliabalias, Researcher at DAISSy, on the NEFELE BOX digital game for the training of candidates, one of the project’s outputs. After this presentation, the teachers played the game and tried to create their own scenarios, under the guidance of Mr. Chaliabalias.

Emphasis was put on the interconnection of the NEFELE with the Lead-Online, a related European project that is also being implemented by DAISSy-HOU as a partner, which was presented by Konstantinos Potsis, Project Manager and Researcher of DAISSy, who analyzed its content.

The NEFELE multiplier event was concluded with a reflection on the action and a fruitful discussion on the introduction of the respective educational model in schools and its benefits for both the teachers and the students. The atmosphere was pleasant and the comments were positive, for the implementation of such projects and the willingness to actively participate in future initiatives of this kind.

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University is thankful to the participants that contributed to the success of the dissemination event, through their continuous support.

NEFELE is a thirty-month project (1st December 2021-31st May 2024), funded by the Erasmus+ EU programme and implemented by a consortium of six (6) partners from five (5) countries (Spain, Italy, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Greece), with DAISSy-HOU as the Greek partner.

On 19th and 20th September 2023, the “European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU)” hosted the fourth Transnational Partners’ Meeting (TPM) of the “NEFELE-NEET prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education” EU project, that took place in Maastricht (Netherlands).

The TPM was attended in presence by representatives of the partners i.e. the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU), the Hellenic Open University (HOU), the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, (SUPSI) and SMARTED (SM).

The NEFELE project aims at modelling innovative methodologies for middle school pre-service teachers that can support adolescents’ career construction and a positive vision of the future. Specifically, NEFELE provides curricular frameworks based on career development and positive psychology through tools (such as Massive Open Online Course-MOOC, digital game and OER Shared Platform), in order to orient teachers’ supportive behaviours.

On the first TPM day, the sessions started by focusing on the state of the art and open issues of the NEFELE MOOC. Specifically, the partnership discussed the certification process of the MOOC, which is developed under the responsibility of the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU, being the Greek project partner. DAISSy-HOU participated in the TPM and was represented by Achilles Kameas, HOU Professor, Director of DAISSy, Vasiliki Takouli, Project Manager and Administrator of DAISSy, as well as Rizos Chaliabalias, Senior researcher of DAISSy.

Emphasis was put to the presentation of the final version of the MOOC, delivered by Vasiliki Takouli, who explained in detail its content, the way of operation and the benefits for the trainees and the tutors. More precisely, the MOOC units cover the following topics: current threats and challenges of the labour market, competences needed for career transitions, career development and the role of teachers in students’ career transition, positive psychology and the use of technologies and tangible user interfaces in the educational context.

Then, the SMARTED project partner presented the gamification approach of the NEFELE game and explained the steps for creating scenarios and the game to be useful in the classroom to enhance adolescent career exploration.

On the second TPM day, the meeting focused on the NEFELE OERs (Open Educational Resources) shared platform, the project deliverable scheduled in these months. The main idea is to create a WebApp on career guidance to promote career decisions in students and help other people (teachers, parents, career practitioners) find helpful information on career paths, to support adolescents.

NEFELE is a thirty-month (1st December 2021-31st May 2024) project, funded by the Erasmus+ EU program, implemented by a consortium of six (6) partners from five (5) countries (Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Greece) with the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU, being the Greek partner.

With the successful organization and implementation of the Multiplier Event entitled “Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies”, the DAISSy research group of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) completed the activities of the “SparkDigiGirls: Empower Girls’ Creativity Through Use of Digital Technologies“ European project. The event took place on-site on July 12 2023, at the “Byzantino” Hotel in Patras, Greece.

The SparkDigiGirls aims at encouraging girls to explore digital technologies such as AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of things) and come up with new and exciting ideas by utilizing their newly acquired digital knowledge to chart the waters of the male-dominated STEM industry with fresh, different, and creative viewpoints.

The event was addressed to teachers, vocational education and training providers, apprenticeship advisors, vocational training teachers, IT solutions providers, Government representatives, University representatives, students e.t.c..

The launching speech was delivered by Achilles Kameas, Professor of HOU and Director of DAISSy, who presented the activities of the Research Group and emphasized on its valuable projects and their impact on society. Then, Mr. Konstantinos Potsis, Project Manager of DAISSy, introduced the agenda of the event to the audience and briefly explained the aim of the SparkDigiGirls EU project.

Furthermore, Mrs Evgenia Pierri, Director of the Directorate of Secondary Education of Achaia (Prefecture at the Region of Western Greece-RWG), held the session entitled “Women’s participation in information and communication technologies (ICT) – The role of secondary education”, by elaborating on the gender gap of women’s participation rate in ICT and STEM professions, the role of the secondary education in closing this gap, and the measures already taken or planned by the Directorate, towards this direction.

The sessions continued by Pr. Fotis Lazarinis, Researcher of DAISSy, presenting the SparkDigiGirls project, its activities and deliverables, namely: the “Twofold analysis of ways how innovative technologies may develop creativity of girls”, the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” online learning program, the “Digital Female Role Model Campaign” and the “Guidebook to empower youth workers as mentors to pursue girls’ creativity through usage of digital applications”. It is worth mentioning that twelve (12) youth workers/secondary education teachers and sixty five (65) girls were engaged in the project activities in Greece, who participated in the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” online learning program, and are school students at the Achaia (Prefecture at the RWG), the city of Agrinio (Prefecture of Etoloakarnania of the RWG) and the city of Mytilene (at the Lesvos Island of North Aegean). In addition, inspirational videos of women with a leadership role in the IT, created during the “Digital Female Role Model Campaign”, were presented.

A joyful part of the event was the following presentation from the group of teachers and students from the 6th General Highschool of Patras, who won the educational trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia! This was the award of the evaluation process of their performance in the SparkDigiGirls online learning program. The winners shared their experiences and explained how their involvement in the project expanded their horizons.

Emphasis was put to the firm links of SparkDigiGirls with two other EU projects currently ongoing by DAISSy-HOU on STEM education i.e. SpicE: Special Education STEAM Academy and NEFELE: Neet prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education, that were presented respectively, by Mrs Natalia Spyropoulou and Mrs Vasiliki Takouli, Project Managers of DAISSy-HOU.

An interactive and interesting discussion with the audience followed the speeches, regarding suggestions on activities to motivate girls to take part in STEM-STEAM, just before the ceremony on commendations awarded to the schools and the teachers, involved in the “Unleash your creativITy with technology” learning program.

More precisely, the following schools obtained an award for participation in the SparkDigiGirls learning program: Vocational High School of Paralia Patras, 6th General High School of Patras, General High School of Dafni Kalavryta, 5th General High School of Agrinio, 2nd Vocationa High School of Agrinio and Model Experimental High School of Mytilene.

On 16th and 17th February 2023, the Hellenic Open University (HOU) hosted the third Transnational Partners’ Meeting (TPM) of the “NEFELE-NEET prevention in Educational systems through positive Future vision Enhancing Learning and teacher Education” EU project, that took place at its headquarters-antenna, in Athens (Greece) and also provided the possibility for online participation.

More precisely, the meeting was attended in presence by the representatives of the following project partners: the Hellenic Open University-HOU (Greece), the University of Naples Federico II- UNINA (Italy), the University of Valencia-UVEG (Spain), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland-SUPSI (Switzerland) and Smarted-SM (Italy), while the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities-EADTU (Netherlands) participated online.

NEFELE project aims at modelling innovative methodologies for pre-service teachers of middle schools that can be useful to support adolescents’ career construction and a positive vision of the future. Specifically, NEFELE provides curricular frameworks, based on career development and positive psychology through tools (MOOC, digital game and OER Shared Platform) to orient teachers’ supportive behaviours.

On the first TPM day, the Partnership recorded the introduction to the modules of the NEFELE Massive Open Online Course-MOOC. The MOOC will consist of five (5) modules based on the NEFELE framework (for more information, please refer to: https://zenodo.org/record/7553717#.ZAX1sy2h0dU). Then, additional recording of the Introduction of specific modules was completed per partner, accordingly: for Module 1 “World of work challenges and students’ career development” by UNINA, for Module 2 “Supporting students’ career development” by SUPSI, for Module 3 “Students’ well-being” by UVEG, and finally for Module 4 “Innovative teaching-learning practices” and Module 5 “The NEFELE Box” by SM.

Moreover, audio tracks were also recorded to be implemented in the NEFELE digital game, in order to used by middle school teachers for promoting the career exploration. The audios contain information about the resources and the competences needed by adolescents for the career decision-making process. The audios were recorded by the Partners in English (SM), Italian (UNINA), French (SUPSI), Spanish (UVEG) and Greek (HOU) and will be at the disposal of teachers, as a guide for curricular programs on career exploration in middle schools.

On the second TPM day, the meeting focused on the state of the art and pending issues of the two project deliverables to be developed within the upcoming months i.e. the NEFELE MOOC and the NEFELE BOX.

The DAISSy Research Group of the HOU host of the 3rd TPM, is the leader of the design and development of the NEFELE MOOC. The Research Group was represented by Mrs Vasiliki Takouli, DAISSy’s Project Manager and Administrator as well as Mrs Vicky Maratou, DAISSy’s Project Manager and Senior researcher, who presented the first version of the MOOC platform and analysed the topics to be covered by the various units, namely: ¡current threats and challenges of labour market ¡ competences needed for career transitions ¡career development and the role of teachers in students’ career transition ¡ positive psychology and the use of technologies and tangible user interfaces in the educational context.

Accordingly, the Smarted-SM presented the gamification approach of the NEFELE BOX. It is noteworthy, that teachers will be involved in creating game scenarios within the NEFELE multiplier events to be held in the forthcoming months in Italy, Spain and Greece.

The 3rd TPM was completed by a session dedicated to the presentation of the Dissemination Plan by EADTU and the vivid exchange among the partners about the next steps of the project implementation.

NEFELE is a thirty-month (1st December 2021-31st May 2024) project, funded by Erasmus+ EU program, implemented by a consortium of six (6) partners from five (5) countries (Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Greece) with the DAISSy Research Group of the HOU, being the Greek partner.
